Licensed Activities

In 1996, our government appointed a special authority to inspect and grant licences to Activity Centres.

Schools must check a Centre is licensed for a growing list of activities.

An activity is often dangerous because it is not correctly organised; not simply because of the nature of the activity itself!

These activities are typically those where specialist instructors, equipment and training programmes are vital to ensure safety.

The following lists the activities covered by the scheme at the point of writing:-

  • pot-holing

  • mine exploration

  • cave diving

  • rock climbing

  • ice climbing

  • abseiling

  • gorge walking

  • ghyll scrambling

  • sea-level traversing

  • walking in remote moorland and mountain areas

  • fell-running

  • orienteering

  • pony trekking

  • mountain biking

  • off-piste skiing

  • off-piste snowboarding

  • skating

  • sledging

  • canoeing

  • kayaking

  • dragon-boarding

  • wave skiing

  • white-water rafting

  • improvised rafting

  • sailing

  • sailboarding
